A quick operational update: these updates are moving from daily-no-matter-what to "as there's actual news". Much of the coverage recently has been about the same things we've all known for a while. Omicron and new variants can reinfect and escape some immune responses, so vaccination + masking is still the best practice regardless of what the government in your locale says. Thus, when there's actual news of significance, I'll send out a newsletter, but more of the same "wear a mask and get vaccinated" isn't especially helpful.
Unrelated to COVID, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, you'll want to follow simple preparedness tips as well. On your urgent to do list TODAY should be to fill up any fuel for your vehicles if you own any, because energy prices are likely to go nuts for a little while. That will have knock on effects for pricing of consumer goods, so make sure your basic supplies and stocks are in good shape, as well as throw additional wrenches into the supply chain. If you need something regularly, buy it instead of waiting until you run out of it.

Omicron BA.2 was able to reinfect 25% of people who had BA.1. "The newly found Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern has rapidly spread worldwide. Omicron carries numerous mutations in key regions and is associated with increased transmissibility and immune escape. The variant has recently been divided into four subvariants with substantial genomic differences, in particular between Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. With the surge of Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.2, a large number of reinfections from earlier cases has been observed, raising the question of whether BA.2 specifically can escape the natural immunity acquired shortly after a BA.1 infection. To investigate this, we selected a subset of samples from more than 1,8 million cases of infections in the period from November 22, 2021, until February 11, 2022. Here, individuals with two positive samples, more than 20 and less than 60 days apart, were selected. From a total of 187 reinfection cases, we identified 47 instances of BA.2 reinfections shortly after a BA.1 infection, mostly in young unvaccinated individuals with mild disease not resulting in hospitalization or death."

Commentary: BA.2 is sufficiently different from BA.1 that reinfection is likely, though the disease was mild. Make sure you're boosted and masked!

A reminder of the simple daily habits we should all be taking.
1. Wear the best mask available to you when you'll be around people you don't live with, even after you've been vaccinated. Respirators are back in stock at online retailers, too. Wear an N95/FFP2/KN95 that's NIOSH-approved or better mask if you can obtain it. If you can't get an N95 mask, wear a surgical mask with a cloth mask over it.

3. Get vaccinated as soon as you're able to, and fulfill the full vaccine regimen, including boosters. Remember that you are not vaccinated until everyone you live with is vaccinated. If you received an adenovirus vaccine (J&J/AstraZeneca), consider getting an mRNA single shot booster (Pfizer/Moderna) if available. If it's available, choose Moderna as your first choice for both vaccine and booster, Pfizer as your second choice. However, remember than any vaccine is better than no vaccine.
4. Wash/sanitize your hands every time you are in or out of your home.
5. Stay out of indoor spaces that aren't your home and away from people you don't live with as much as practical. Minimize your contact with others and avoid indoor places as much as you can; indoor spaces spread the disease through aerosols and distance is less effective at mitigating your risks.
6. Aim to have 3-6 months of living expenses on hand in case the pandemic gives another crazy plot twist to the economy.
7. Replenish your supplies as you use them. Avoid reducing your stores to pre-pandemic levels in case an outbreak causes unexpected supply chain disruptions.
8. Ventilate your home as frequently as weather and circumstances permit, except when you share close airspaces with other residences (like a window less than a meter away from a neighboring window).
